Mansfield Family - First half of the 1900's

Kew to Cue

By Gary Buck November 2016

Lets review the Mansfields who had settled into Melbourne life.  Frederick and Jessie had six childrern, all in the leafy Melbourne suburb of Kew,  Harry did not live to see his first birthday.

The others (Roberta, William, Alice, Egbert and Ernest) who were born between 1872 and 1880, all died between 1946 and 1950.

  •  Roberta married Charles Sweetland in 1896 and he was a fruiterer in Fitzroy..had 3 daughters, Elsie, Grace and Ruby.
  •  William Frederick married Sophia Haines in 1899. He was a blacksmith at Alberton in country Victoria, they had one son, William, who died before his first birthday.
  •  Alice Maud married Jonathon Rice in 1894. They lived in Northcote and Johnathon (John) is listed as a driver one year and traveller in another..had 2 sons, William and Fred.
  • Egbert married Elsie Rigg in 1909 and became a dairy farmer in the Melbourne suburb of Box Hill.  They had two sons, Gordon and Edward.

My Grandfather, Ernest Charles Mansfield, for some reason decided that Victoria was not for him.  He was the youngest child and lost his father by the time he turned 13.

I can find him in Kew, living with his mother as a 23 year old in 1903.  At that time he was a carter.

I've also seen a photo that is supposedly of him with his mate Jack Willsmore in 1899 in Queenstown, Tasmania.

There is quite a gap until 1916 when he appears in Meekatharra as a bread carter.  We also know he worked in Cuearound the same time.

For those of you that don't know Cue or Kew, they are very different.  Kew is one of the greenest, leafy places in suburban Melbourne, Cue is one of the most remote towns in Australia, mor than 600km north east of Perth.

In 1918, the 37 year old Ernest married a 21 year old Vera May Walker.  The marriage was registered in the district of Murchison WA.

By 1920, Frederick Thomas Mansfield was born in Cue, followed by Verna Doris in 1924, Ernest Raymond in 1926 and Nancy Margaret in 1930. There is also a possibility that they lost a daughter (Norma) at birth in 1921.

Verna and Nancy were born in Manjimup, Ernest in Moora.

The timing is interesting -

  • 1920 - Fred born in Cue
  • 1924 - Verna born in Manjimup
  • 1925 - Electoral roll says Ernest Charles lived in Manjimup as a baker
  • 1926 - Ern born in Moora
  • 1930 - Nancy born in Manjimup
  • 1931-1943 - Electoral roll says Ernest Charles lived in Margaret River as a baker
  • 1946-1948 - Ernest Charles' two brothers and sisters all died in Melbourne
